The film also marks the debut of star kid Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. It is said that in the film Varalaxmi plays the role of a Latin American dancer who hails from London while Simbu's specialty will be hip-hop from India. "He is a gift to any director. Everyone is under the false perception that he interferes too much. But he is actually very involved as an actor. He never once questioned if I could deliver and had complete confidence in me," this is what debutant director Vignesh Shivan had to say about his lead star STR in Podaa Podi. When asked about his mentors in the industry, he said, "I consider both Mani Ratnam and A. R. Rahman to be my mentors though I have not met the former."

Podaa Podi like Minnale and Alaipayuthey

Podaa Podi's music has been a big chartbuster and the director Vignesh Shiva is a happy man as expected. Sony Music, the audio rights holder, feels that it's been a long time since an entire album has become a hit. Podaa Podi has achieved what movies like Minnale and Alaipayuthey achieved a decade or so back, by becoming a whole-album chartbuster. The online downloads and ringtone downloads have also been healthy.

The movie is releasing for Diwali and features all rounder STR and first timer Varalakshmi. Dharan is responsible for the super hit music.

Gautham Menon to turn STR Again

Gautham Menon's current film 'Neethaane En Ponvasantham' is nearing completion. Even as it is currently being discussed, rumours about his next have surfaced and they suggest that the director will be teaming up Simbu again in his next venture. Initially, it was reported that Gautham Menon would be working with Suriya in his next, but since the project got scrapped, it is likely that he will turn to Simbu again. After the success of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, it has long been debated that we might see a sequel to it soon. Now that the Gautham-Simbu pair is together again, we can expect it from the duo. It is yet to be seen whether A.R.Rahman will be composing the music for the film, or if Gautham Menon will prefer Illayaraja again. No matter the choice, we are sure to have a great show on our hands when the team comes together.

STR and Vijay to Romance Nisha

People who have listened to the songs of Thuppakki must have noted the track 'Antarctica' in which there is a section in which the singer goes 'Oh Nisha Nisha Nisha'. This might be due to the fact that Kajal Aggarwal's name in the movie is Nisha. In the same way, in the publicity ads of Podaa Podi, Varalakshmi's name in the movie has been revealed as Nisha while STR's name in the movie is Arjun.

Looks like both Vijay and STR will be romancing girls named Nisha in their respective movies. Both these movies are slated to release for Diwali, as well. Nice little coincidence, one must say.

Worth the wait - THE HINDU

Varalakshmi Sarathkumar’s debut in Tamil cinema might have been delayed by four years. But then, she will be compensating for the time lost with two releases in quick succession.

While her long-awaited Poda Podi, featuring Simbu in the lead along with her, has been slated for a Deepavali release, her Madha Gaja Rajaopposite Vishal is likely to release early next year.

Says the pretty lass, “I’m not sentimental. I strongly believe that whatever happens is for the best.” Poda Podi, which went on floors in 2008, has had several delays. There were even reports that the project had been shelved and that Varalakshmi had walked out of it only to return later.

She clarifies, “I was never out of the project in the first place, and therefore, the question of returning to it does not arise. The truth is we faced a lot of problems in the beginning. The film, we believe, has come out at the right time. Poda Podi is a project that’s close to my heart. It gave me an opportunity to work with some wonderful people. They are now like family.”

Varalakshmi’s character in Poda Podi hails from London, while Simbu’s is from India. The duo fall in love and get married in the film. “The different value systems and cultures they come from create problems in their lives. How they resolve them is what Poda Podi is about,” says Varalakshmi. Varalakshmi, who is known for her dancing skills, plays a Latin American dancer in Poda Podi. Simbu too is a good dancer. Ask her what it was like working with Simbu and the rest of the cast, and she says, “Simbu is one of the most talented people I have met. He is knowledgeable about cinema and helpful. Besides, we are both fun-loving. The casting too was fabulous. In the film, Jeffery Vardon plays my instructor and I couldn’t ask for a better dance partner.”

So, who is the better dancer — Simbu or Varalakshmi? She laughs, “You have to tell me after watching the dance sequences. Simbu has loads of energy and it shows on screen. I have realised that facing the camera requires a lot more effort than performing on stage. Every dancer has his own strengths. Simbu’s strength is hip hop, while I am strong in Latin American dancing.”
