Vaanam – A Sify Special

This short story genre which is new to Tamil cinema, manages to work well for the new age audience who likes everything in short doses. Almost all the stories are deftly told, with the mandatory twist in the climax which keeps you riveted.
Let’s take a look at the stories- Bharath (Bharath), an aspiring rock star sets out to give his first solo stage show on the New year eve in Chennai with his friends. They miss the flight and decide to drive down from Bangalore for the concert. How during the travel he changes his attitude and becomes a better person is shown in the climax.
Rahim (Prakash Raj) and wife Zara (Sonia Aggarwal) who lost their twins during the communal riots in Coimbatore is getting back to normal. The couple set out in search of Rahim’s brother who is now in Chennai. He is always suspected as a terrorist by a police officer (Ravi Prakash) who hates Muslims.
A poor, old weaver and his daughter-in-law Lakshmi (Saranya) in Tirunelveli owes money to a ruthless financier (Kathal Dandapani). When Lakshmi’s son a bright student at school is taken away by the financier as daily labourer, the illiterate people sets out to Chennai to sell kidney and procure money to get the boy and put him back at school.
Cable Raja (Silambarasan) is a happy-go-lucky lower-middle class guy who dreams of becoming rich by marrying wealthy girl is trying hard with his friends (Santhanam and VTV Ganesh) to cough up money to take his girlfriend Pooja (Jasmine) for a New Year bash at the five-star hotel in Chennai.
Saroja (Anushka) is a call girl who is under the control of Rani Amma who runs a brothel in Sulurupettai in TN –Andhra border. Saroja is in huge demand by rich and powerful in town and the smart girl decides to run away to Chennai and set up her own business. But fate intervenes and she falls into the hands of the local police and she is on the run.
Silambarasan delivers an incredible performance and his versatility comes to forte in the last one hour of the film. He is complemented perfectly by Santhanam and VTV Ganesh who brings the house down with their rib-tickling one-liners. Prakash Raj is simply outstanding with his subtlety and the little nuances while Sonia is charming. Anushka is outstanding as the commercial sex worker as she is able to bring out a life-like performance. All small characters in the film including Anushka’s personal makeup man who comes as a transgender is brilliant.
The film works due to Krish’s story and outstanding camerawork by Nirav Shah. He has used different lightings for each of the stories, which brings out the human element in the episodes. And the camera following the characters conscience in the climax justifies the story. Antony editing makes the narration crisp especially the way he criss-crosses between the parallel stories. Music of Yuvan is just ok, but it is the background score which keeps you hooked to the narration.
Though the film may not be a mass, formula masala entertainer, it is different within the commercial format. Director Krish and his team push the cinematic envelope and bring savvy freshness to Tamil cinema. For this alone he should be applauded.
Vaanam is worth investing on a movie ticket.
Verdict - Very Good

VAANAM MOVIE REVIEW -Behindwoods

Starring: Str, Anushka, Bharath, Vega, Santhanam Direction: Krish Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja Production: Cloud Nine Movies (Dhayanidhi Azhagiri) pic Prolific Telugu director Krish comes to Tamil bringing with him his critically acclaimed Vedam as Vaanam with an ensemble cast of STR (Silambarasan), Bharath, Anushka, Vega, Saranya, Prakash Raj and others. Vedam had given Krish an admirable name to reckon with in the Telugu industry and for his debut in Tamil, the director has chosen the same premise which explored the various layers of human emotions, adhering largely to the original. Vaanam follows a multi narrative format, which is fairly new to Tamil cinema. The product is about how the lives of five completely unrelated individuals from different places converge at one point cascading in a transformation of their persona and the ensuing corollary. The refreshing factor about Vaanam is it has eschewed the standard DNA of commercial flicks and Krish’s authority on the narrative comes to the fore with this delectably mounted product that tugs at your heart strings. The characters in Vaanam are very ordinary, relatable mortals with their respective grey shades. Krish has not attempted to aggrandize them and they stand before you immaculately unornamented with their blemishes. STR as cable Raju, Bharath the rock star, Anushka the commercial sex worker, Saranya the helpless mom of an abducted son and Prakash Raj on the look out for his lost brother are the axles around which Vaanam hinges. The screenplay is intelligently woven around these characters and Krish builds his narration in a neat pattern not losing steam or our attention anywhere. Although dialogues by Giri provide a significant value, it dazzles when Anushka insulted by policeman Radha Ravi says “we sell our souls unrobed but you guys do that with all your robes on” (naanga thuni avuthu velai porom, neenga thuniyoda velai poreenga) or when she jocularly says that while for other jobs, experience is a big plus but in flesh trade, it is just the reverse. Giri’s caliber as an effective dialogue writer is revealed when STR in a choked voice states that truth needs courage and lies do not. And mind you, Vaanam is replete with such gems. All the artists have performed well and have equal screen presence. But the finest moments, of course, belong primarily to STR who reiterates that at the hands of a good script and a director, he can walk away with all the acting honors. The testimony to this is the scene when he snatches the money bag from Saranya and the vicissitude of emotions that play on his face that toggles between greed and conscience. And the scene at the police station when Anushka wonders if his love was true, the profound expression on his face is noteworthy. Anushka, the foul mouthed sex worker oozing oodles of oomph meets the sensual demands of her character but sans vulgarity brings tears while pleading to the doctor to save her friend saying that she is ready to sleep with him innumerable times. Bharath delivers a subdued performance and Prakash Raj is his usual best. While Vega, Soniya and Jasmine are adequate, Saranya, Santhanam and VTV Ganesh have delivered a natural and neat portrayal. The scenes with VTV Ganesh are enjoyable and when he talks about standing in front of director Shankar’s house with Rahman as company is hilarious. Santhanam as STR’s friend is his perfect humorous foil. Anushka’s transgender friend Karpuram and Saranya’s father-in-law are impressive. Under Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music, the opening song ‘Who am I’ showcases Bharath’s dancing skills which is youthful and peppy. The latest youth anthem ‘Evandi Onna Pethan’ is well picturized and STR’s adeptness with his feet and Nirav Shah’s brilliant camera work in the number are noticeable. Although ‘No money no honey’ is enjoyable, it does not add value to the film’s progress in any way. Nirav Shah’s cinematography is appreciable and the angles and lighting sensibilities up the production value of the film. The different type of lighting at the lodge is just an example. With his tight frame composition, Editor Anthony is impressive. Even though Vaanam is alluring in most aspects and travels linearly on the attempted track, the cinematic feel of the climax is a placid wart. The track ‘No money no honey’ is apparently forced and brings down the tempo of the film. Director Krish makes his impactful debut with a different narrative format that holds the attention of the audience. Vaanam is succulent with diverse complex human emotions from deceit to greed to rage to remorse. The film has a plot that can find patrons among wider variety of audience as the theme of humanity is much a catholic one that transcends barriers. Verdict: An intelligent fare with substance

scenes and the shoot, which features seven cameras and 60 fighters, is taking place at Binny
Mills. Yuvan Shankar Raja is the music director of the film that’s being made in Tamil,
Telugu and Hindi.”The actor admits that it’ll be his costliest film till date. “The budget will be around ` 30 to 40 crore.Vettai Mannan is an action-packed gangster story. There are three heroines in the film, which will release only next year.”Simbu says that it was while shooting for Podaa Podi in London that director Nelson narrated the crux of the story that impressed him. The script had elements of comedy and action, which Simbu thought would make it a mass entertainer. He immediately spoke to his friend and producer S S Chakravarthy, who agreed to produce the film. The action scenes will be choreographed by Hollywood stunt directors. Adds Simbu, about the film that will be shot in Chennai, the USA and Mexico, “We are negotiating with a top Bollywood actress to play the main heroine’s role. STR and TR voice out for Doo

The magnificient father-son duo Father T.Rajendar and Thalaivan STR have recently lend voice for a Tamil film titled Doo, which is directed by debutant Shriram who worked as an assitant to Thirumurugan.

Protagonist T.Rajendar sir, has sung a fast number and our own Thalaivan STR aka Silambarasan has sung a Love Melody. The fast track goes like Dumma Vitruda Machannn, illa, sarakka vitru machaann, illa love pandratha vittru da machaan. It is heard T.R sir’s voice has given more energy to the song.

Coming to STR, Simbu has sung the song Oru Paarvaiyil, Poothathu Kanne and it is said that it will definitely be a chart buster at the box office. The director and the producers where all praise for the duo.

Sc clarifies VTV Ganesh’s speech on Gautham and Bala

Denying the articles put on almost by all the Media counter parts, Simbucentral is clarifying to its followers that the articles in almost all the media websites, which reported, VTV Ganesh stating that Vaanam director Krish is 10 times better than Goutham Menon and 20 times better than Bala is absolutely false.

All that VTV Ganesh spoke about is that the director of Vaanam Krish seems to be looking silent but he gets in extra work from the artiste’s and that in one incident he made Bharath stunned by asking him to do a dare act. He also said that Krish was so adamant ‘ofcourse to get the quality’ to have natural effects on the shots and he made every one sweat. This was said in a very funny tone and Ganesh was indeed pulling the legs of the Ace Director Krish which the director himself was enjoying along with the vaanam crew.

He later said that he had experince of working under Director Goutham Menon and has seen Director Bala at his work place, but Krish was torturing us 10/20 times in the name of getting the work ‘again in a comic tone’.

Now this can be checked at the videos of vaanam audio launch, that is available all over. And we are really distressed with few media editors who always support us, to have misuderstood the whole issue. We also request them to give a clarity to their respective followers and to support the vaanam team at their venture.

PS : We also came to see few articles in a tamil media website, claiming STR was hitting at Anoushka and that he was trying to impress her and stuff by speaking praise of her.The fact is STR spoke about evey one, and thanked every one. And all he said of Anoushka was that she was a good actress and she worked hard to bring this project to a good shape. Do you say, she is not a good actress?

Thala’s Mankaatha didn’t disturb Vaanam

The audio launch of Vaanam happened to be a simple affair as it didn’t boast of much grandness, but was spangled with some interesting moments. Producer Ganesh of VTV Productions was the cynosure of everyone’s eyes as he easily captured everyone’s attention with his hilarious compereing. The event was delayed nearly by an hour as Anushka missed her flight from Hyderabad. Filmmaker Vetrimaaran launched the audio of Vaanam and distributed the copies to all the unit members. A three-minute sleek and stylish trailer was screened for the special invitees. The film’s tagline: Five Different Stories, One Climax evoked the curiosity levels of the viewers. Producer Ganesh started off ennobling Vaanam as the ‘South Indian Slumdog Millionaire’ for its unique theme.

Mankatha didn’t disturb Vaanam

Soon after Vaanam was acquired by Cloud Nine Movies, the entire production team started to vigorously promote the film. Producer Ganesh elatedly revealed that despite the busy schedule of Ajith Kumar’s Mankatha, the production team of Cloud Nine Movies made it a point of having discussions every day to promote the movie.

A Torture worst than Bala

Producer Ganesh didn’t miss to break open Bharath’s verdict on director Krish while filming a stunt sequence. Says Ganesh: “On the very first day of the shoot, Bharath was supposed to run against a Tata Sumo on fast motion and shatter the front glass clasping a stone. The task was to be completed on the first take and Bharath accomplished it but in the process had a bleeding injury. While we were treating Bharath, we had Krish’s assistant rushing towards us only to give us a shock that Krish wants Bharath to spread the blood all over his shirt for the realistic touch. Bharath was flabbergasted and said – Even Bala wouldn’t behave such peculiarly.

Guiltiness accepted

Actor Bharath reaffirmed that it was true that he was blown out of water hearing Krish being so realistic. But it’s all for the sake of perfection. Bharath couldn’t stop singing praises of Yuvan Shankar Raja. He didn’t miss to mention that Krish wouldn’t have got a perfect launch than Vaanam.

“They made me feel younger”

Saranya, who plays one of the lead roles, was spotted in a gleaming saree and pleasant smile. The actress, while sharing her working experience, said, “I am the most senior actor in this team that has more youngsters. But they made me feel younger and we were exuberant throughout the shoot. Thanks to Krish for casting me again after the Telugu (Saranya performed the role in Telugu version as well) version.”

Filmmaking is very different and easy as well

“Filmmaking is very difficult… Filmmaking is very easy – both depends on how the team works,” said Krish, who continued totting up that he felt very privileged to have such a proficient team to work with. Well, on speaking about Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music, he said that every song in this album has a different soul and will surely grab everyone’s attention.

Best than original

Young Superstar Silambarasan made it clear that the screenplay will be completely different from the Telugu version. Shedding light on Krish’s USP, Simbu said, “Soon after watching the first half of Vedam we desperately wanted to remake the film in Tamil. Apparently, we invited Krish for initial level of discussions. We were surprised to hear him confessing the flaws, he committed in Vedam. He was so involved in the remake version and was sure-footed of setting things right with Vaanam with a motto – Best Than The Original.”

Love your work, results will be fantastic

A wonderful quotation from Yuvan Shankar Raja and very inspiring as well… Yuvan Shankar Raja spoke about the instructions his father (Maestro Ilayaraja) used to give him – Love the work you are doing and the outputs are sure to exceed your very own expectations.

Vaanam Review-> Rocking Album

Simbu’s Vaanam is one of the much-awaited summer releases in Kollywood. The story revolves around five people who meet in the climax of the film due to unforeseen circumstances. Vaanam also has Anushka, Bharath, Vega, Prakashraj, Sonia Agarwal, Jayaprakash and Ganesh in prominent roles. Every time Simbu teams up with Yuvan, you can expect an explosive album in the offing! And this time too there, is no difference; so here we bring you an exclusive music review of Vaanam!

The album begins with the energetic ‘Evan Di Una Pethan’ which is already topping the charts. The song is rendered perfectly by Simbu; Yuvan’s English raps in between form another major highlight. Music director Yuvan Shankar Raja has made the song very peppy by using heavy beats. Apart from singing, Simbu has also penned the lyrics for this simple and colloquial song.

Then comes the desi ‘No Money No Honey’, a typical ‘kuthu’ number. Srikanth Deva, Andrea and Simbu has rendered this peppy dance track. It is a mass kuthu number likely to be picturised on Simbu and Anushka. However, the music is too loud and dominates the lyrics.

Next is a solo number ‘Vaanam’ rendered by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The song is likely to appear in bits and pieces throughout the film. When the guitar strumming begins, you already know this track’s going to stay on ‘repeat’ for a while.

Benny Dayal has crooned the fast-paced, energetic ‘Who I Am’. Check out for some amazing instrumentation from Yuvan in this track. This angry track is likely to appear when the hero gets frustrated on life. The opening of this song reminds us of ‘Uriyin Uriye’ from Kaakha Kaakha. The heavy drum beat and catchy lyrics will definitely attract many young listeners.

‘Cable Raja’ is likely to be the intro song for Simbu (as he plays the role of Cable Raja in the film). Abhishek and Lawrence have sung this mass number. We are already expecting some electrifying dance moves from Simbu in this track.
